Soft Animals/Opening to Pleasure Practices

Tuesdays in May and June

6:30pm ET (60 minutes)

Virtual

Tiered Pricing: $20/$15

This practice is an exploration of interception, our ability to feel what’s happening inside our body through constant self directed intuitive movement. The practice is a very open space.  We can express emotion without having to know what it’s about. There’s room to bang on pillows or take a primal scream. It could also open to states of pleasure, fun, and silliness.

The class opens with some exercises from the wheel of consent and the work of Betty Martin, with exercises such as waking up the hands to feel more pleasure, or dropping into the question of asking ourselves “What do we want.”

We then move into the movement practice that is on all fours, eyes closed, and keeping the head low. We use music to inspire catharsis and shifting. The idea is that we always keep one small part of the body moving and we’re listening to where the body wants to go. This could be just one finger moving, or a part of your body swaying.  The movement is done with cameras off so that all ideas of performative movement are lifted and the movement is a private experience.

There will be suggestions of developmental movement such as reaching, pushing, and grasping. The class ends with an integration, which is a resting practice that Marisa guides with healing imagery. Participants find the class leaves a feeling of groundedness, space, sometimes insight, and a sense of release.

This practice was created by Carmen Spagnola, and Marisa teaches it on Carmen’s platform called The Numinous Network. Carmen is carrying on the ideas of nonlinear movement founder Michaela Boehm.

To prepare for the class, the practice should be done on a soft surface. You may like to layer a few blankets on top of your yoga mat. Have blankets and pillows on hand, and perhaps even some stuffed animals. Have an object that fits in the palm of your hand at the ready.
